raise your glasses people
for the time has come.
such a long day it's been, amigos
my heart is worn from trusting too much
& hoping on the lies they spew
when they face the camera.
how do we see the future,
when our tears keep
covering our eyes?
how do we drink ourselves to sleep
when the rats now sing
better than the birds,
& palmwine, now makes us sober,
instead of drunk?
raise those glasses people,
let's sip a little
of our tears,
just before we clean these lines
that divide mortality,
from immortality.
we tried to take a different path from
that which our ancestors took
but,
seems all path leads home, eh?
we'll take this cup
& offer it to them
maybe, they'll welcome us, eh?
maybe we can be better fathers,
& brothers & people.
maybe we can watch over our children,
from clouds high up the night's sky
& speak to them when their eyes
are closed in sleep,
and wipe the tear off their eyelids.
maybe we can raise our banner,
& show it to them
so when they'll remember us, and cry,
& laugh,
& say we were cowards
just maybe,
they'd also cry,
& laugh
& say we were mortals.
