The ship had been sailing for weeks now, and the boy had grown accustomed to the mundane routine of life on board. He spent most of his days exploring the ship, watching the waves crash against the hull, and observing the passengers as they went about their business. They were a diverse assortment of souls, seemingly ordinary, carrying their own stories and dreams upon the ship. But there was one passenger who caught his attention more than the others.
He was a man who exuded an air of elegance and refinement that spoke of royalty. He always kept to himself, his elegance and air of mystery captivating the young boyโs curious mind. It was during one tranquil evening, as the fading sun painted the sky in hues of gold and orange, that the boy noticed the man engrossed in a book of philosophy. His eyes seemed to devour the words, his mind diving deep into the realms of thought. The boy was fascinated by him and couldn't help but wonder who he was and what his story was.
One day, the boy decided to approach him. "Excuse me, sir," he said timidly, "what are you reading?"
The man looked up from his book and stared at the boy for a moment before returning his gaze to the pages in front of him. "It's a book on philosophy," he replied curtly.
Undeterred, the boy persisted. "I'm sorry, sir, but I don't understand what philosophy is. Could you explain it to me?"
The man sighed and closed his book. "Philosophy is the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence."
The boy furrowed his brow. "I don't think I quite understand, sir. Could you explain it to me in simpler terms?"
The man regarded him for a moment before speaking again. "Philosophy is the search for truth, for meaning, and for understanding. It is the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom."
The boy nodded thoughtfully, taking in the man's words. "I see," he said. "That sounds very important."
The man smiled slightly, a rare expression on his usually stoic face. "Indeed, it is," he said. "And it is a pursuit that never ends."
And with that, a conversation began. They talked about life, about the pursuit of knowledge, and about the importance of wisdom. The boy found himself drawn in by the man's words, fascinated by the way he spoke and the ideas he shared.
As the conversation went on, the boy realized that he was learning far more than he ever had before. Little did he know that he was casually having a chat with the kingโs special advisor - one of the greatest minds in the empire. The man challenged the boyโs assumptions and encouraged him to think beyond the confines of his own experience.
โQuestion everything!โ The man said sternly as he shared stories and insights that broadened the boy's perspective of the world.
As the night wore on, the boy's mind expanded, his thoughts swirling like galaxies within him. The man's words resonated deeply, striking chords that awakened dormant aspirations within his young heart. He listened with fervor, absorbing every ounce of knowledge bestowed upon him.
Through their conversation, the boy learned that life was not a mere series of coincidences, but a tapestry woven with threads of intention and meaning. The man's anecdotes and parables unveiled the secrets of the universe, encouraging the boy to embark on a journey of self-discovery and embrace the signs that the universe presented.
The conversation ended just as the first light of dawn painted the horizon, and the boy's heart felt lighter and filled with purpose. Somewhere deep inside, the boy knew that his life had been changed forever. He had been given a gift that he would carry with him for the rest of his journey and mission. He had been given the gift of wisdom. With gratitude and newfound determination, the boy bid farewell to the man, knowing their encounter would be etched in his memory like an indelible mark.
โConversations With a Strangerโ is a series I started to document the many inspiring and heartfelt conversations I (and others) have had with random people along the journey through life. The world is changing quickly and everything is moving so fast. Now, more than ever, weโre realizing that nothing is permanent.
Some of our conversations with strangers have helped rekindle our dying flames at certain points in our lives, and what better way to immortalize those exchanges than write about them?
โConversations With a Strangerโ might not be published weekly like #MondayLetters but you should definitely expect it on a calm windy evening or on a busy hopeful morning.
