“Quickly! At this rate, we're probably gonna die!”
Coach bellowed to me as we ran across the mountain plains. He was about twenty or so yards ahead, and never slowed or turned to look at me who was for obvious reasons, lagging behind.
The breeze was like a soft caress, dimming my eyes as it rushed past my ears, making me stop to recollect the vivid twilight colors of scented flowers I'd seen along the way. It all seemed so magical. I'd never been this excited before in my entire life____
“What has a thumb and five fingers, but isn't alive?” The voice, low but familiar, tore through my dreams.
“Arrgh! It's too early for jokes, coach”
“It's a glove, son. And they're called riddles, not jokes.” He said as he threw a pair of climbing gloves to me. “Come on, we've got a mountain to explore! You can sleep when you're dead.”
I always wondered a lot of things about coach. Like, why he always spoke in riddles and constantly talked about death as if it were some casual event. But, I couldn't give it much thought today. I jumped out of bed, unable to conceal my excitement.
“Do we leave now?” I asked, trying not to sound too impatient.
“We'll leave as soon as the sun comes out. Eat some food and save your energy. You'll need them”
Time seemed to crawl before the sun finally came out.
“Come on boy, let's go!” Coach roared as he slung a bag over his powerful shoulders, and trotted out unto the plains. I picked up my camera and scuttled behind. Coach was a tall, energetic man with a sweet smile and a good sense of humor. He loved adventures and looked way younger than people of his age.
“Look at these ancient caves!” He called out, pausing near a thick wall covered in colorful flowers and green grasses. I stopped beside him with mouth and eyes wide opened.
“Let's check inside, coach”
“These caves are hundreds of years old. Nobody knows what could be in those holes. Come on son, let's reach the other side of the mountain.” Coach said and continued jogging.
I slipped inside the cave with my camera, eager to see what could be in those ancient caves. It was dark and smelt awful. There were no flowers in here and I heard sounds which couldn't have been made by humans.
I heard something snarl behind me and saw greenish eyes in the darkness. I became terrified. I tried to run out. I felt something grip my arms.
I managed to wriggle free and dash out, but it followed me. It was chasing me!
“Coach! Coach!!!”
I couldn't see coach!
“Mommy!!” I cried out. I felt the creature so close behind me.
“Hey boy! Oh shit!!” I heard coach's voice. He'd seen me.
“Help me!!” I ran into the highlands. I couldn't look back. I ran past coach.
“Faster!!” Coach called out. He was far behind me now.
I couldn't keep up. My legs had grown tired, but I didn't stop. Didn't look back. Coach was shouting. I could hear his voice but I couldn't make out what he was saying.
My legs gave in and I tumbled on the ground, rolling over the slopy hill. My eyes slowly shut as I blacked out.
“You know what's harder to catch the faster you run?” I could hear coach's voice. I saw him standing over me as I blinked my eyes open.
“Your breath! Hahaha,” He says, smiling. “Breathe, son. Breathe.”
